Brake Pad Thickness Guide: When to Replace
Brake pads are a wear item, and knowing how much friction material is left is the difference between a routine replacement and damaging rotors or losing stopping power. Here are the numbers, how to check them without pulling a wheel, and realistic cost and life expectancy by pad type.
Brake Pad Thickness at a Glance
Thickness is measured from the steel backing plate to the outer surface of the friction material. Only the friction material counts -- the backing plate is not part of the measurement.

Rule of thumb: 3 mm is the replace-now line for almost every modern car. Some European manufacturers (BMW, Mercedes) have a brake pad wear sensor that triggers the dash warning with roughly 3 mm or less remaining.
How to Check Brake Pad Thickness Without Removing the Wheel
Most vehicles let you view the outboard pad through the gap between the spokes of the wheel. Turn the steering to one side for better access to the front pads.
- Turn the wheel fully left or right to expose the caliper on one side.
- Find the caliper (the clamp-shaped part straddling the rotor).
- Look through the caliper opening to see the pad material sitting against the rotor.
- Estimate the remaining friction material. Use a flashlight and compare to the thickness of a US quarter (about 1.75 mm) or two stacked dimes (2.7 mm).
- Check both sides. Pads often wear unevenly when a caliper slide pin is sticking.
For a precise reading, pull the wheel and measure with a brake pad gauge or digital caliper. A $10 brake gauge reads remaining thickness in millimeters on the spot.
Wear Indicators and Squealer Tabs
Almost every modern brake pad has some form of wear indicator built in. There are three common styles:

A high-pitched squeal from the wheels -- whether it stops or changes when you press the brake -- is usually the mechanical wear indicator touching the rotor; replace pads soon. A grinding noise means the friction material is gone and the backing plate is scoring the rotor.
How Long Do Brake Pads Last?
Brake pad life depends more on driving style and traffic than on the pad itself. Stop-and-go city commuting can cut pad life in half compared to highway driving.

Note: on many modern vehicles with electronic brake-force distribution, rear pads can wear as fast as -- or faster than -- the fronts. Check both axles.
Front pads do 60-70% of braking work on most passenger vehicles, so they wear faster. Vehicles with regenerative braking (hybrids and EVs) often see front pads last 80,000-100,000+ miles because the motor handles most low-speed slowing.
