Improper Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Quality Warning
The DD-3364-18 (Detroit Diesel DD Series) diesel fault code means: Improper Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Quality Warning. This is a serious severity code.
This is a standard J1939 fault, not a proprietary code. DD-3364-18 is how this equipment displays SPN 3364 with FMI 18 (data valid but below normal — moderately severe) under the SAE J1939 standard used across heavy equipment. The same SPN can appear on any J1939-compliant machine regardless of brand — so cross-referencing it against your engine maker's documentation is valid even when the equipment brand differs.

What Are the Symptoms of DD-3364-18?
- MIL and Check Engine lamp on
- DEF lamp on
- Escalates to the FMI 1 final warning and inducement if not corrected
What Causes DD-3364-18? (Most Likely First)
- DEF out of specification: Detroit's pass band on the refractometer is 28 to 36% High
- Kinked, cracked, leaking or disconnected DEF lines Medium
- DEF dosing unit delivering the wrong quantity (pass band 108 to 132 mL on the DEF Quantity Test) Medium
- Other active faults, especially SPN 3364/FMI 2, SPN 5246 or SPN 4364, that have to be repaired first Medium
Can I Still Drive with DD-3364-18?
Short distances only. DD-3364-18 is rated serious severity. Keep trips short and get it diagnosed soon rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does SPN 3364 FMI 18 mean on a Detroit Diesel?
It means Improper Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Quality Warning. SPN 3364 FMI 18 is the ACM's DEF quality warning on GHG14 Detroit engines: the SCR system is not converting NOx the way it should for the DEF being dosed, which the module attributes to the fluid. Detroit's procedure checks the fluid first, then the hardware, then proves the fix by watching NOx conversion efficiency during a parked regeneration. FMI 18 is the warning stage; SPN 3364 FMI 1 is the final warning, with the DEF lamp flashing.
Where does this description come from?
From Detroit Diesel Corporation's own service bulletin for this SPN and FMI, which Detroit filed with NHTSA. The title, the conditions and the check sequence above are Detroit's, not a generic J1939 reading of the SPN.

How Do You Diagnose DD-3364-18?
Connect DDDL/DDRS. Repair any other active faults first, except SPN 3364/FMI 2, SPN 5246 (any FMI) and SPN 4364 FMI 1 or 18, which this procedure covers.
Measure the DEF with a refractometer: 28 to 36% passes. Outside that, clean and flush the DEF tank and refill.
Key on, engine off: inspect every DEF line for kinks, cracks, leaks and disconnects.
Unbolt the dosing unit from the exhaust (hoses and connector still attached) and run the DEF Quantity Test: 108 to 132 mL passes; otherwise replace the dosing unit.
Chart engine speed, SCR inlet and outlet temperatures, both NOx sensors and NOx conversion efficiency, then run a parked regeneration outdoors: efficiency must rise above 85% and stay there, and SPN 3364/FMI 2 and all SPN 5246 faults must go inactive. If not, Detroit wants the log files sent to its Customer Support Center.
