DD-3361-5 serious Detroit Diesel DD Series ›

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) System Open Circuit Detected

The DD-3361-5 (Detroit Diesel DD Series) diesel fault code means: Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) System Open Circuit Detected. This is a serious severity code.

This is a standard J1939 fault, not a proprietary code. DD-3361-5 is how this equipment displays SPN 3361 with FMI 5 (current below normal or open circuit) under the SAE J1939 standard used across heavy equipment. The same SPN can appear on any J1939-compliant machine regardless of brand — so cross-referencing it against your engine maker's documentation is valid even when the equipment brand differs.

ANCEL HD7000 Heavy-Duty Diesel Scanner

A $30 car code reader can't do diesel. The HD7000 reads full-system codes and does parked DPF regen, idle/speed-limit, and service resets from the cab — on everything from a 6.7 Cummins/Power Stroke/Duramax pickup to Class-8 trucks (Detroit, Paccar, CAT, Volvo, Mack, International).

What Are the Symptoms of DD-3361-5?

  • MIL and Check Engine lamp on
  • 25% engine derate
  • DEF dosing stopped, so SCR NOx conversion falls off

What Causes DD-3361-5? (Most Likely First)

  • Damaged, spread, unseated or corroded pins at the DEF dosing unit connector or the ACM 120-pin connector High
  • Open wire between pin 1 of the dosing unit connector and pin 28 of the ACM (dosing unit low side) High
  • Failed DEF dosing unit (coil out of the 4-8 ohm range) Medium
  • Failed ACM (only once the harness and dosing unit test good) Low

Can I Still Drive with DD-3361-5?

Short distances only. DD-3361-5 is rated serious severity. Keep trips short and get it diagnosed soon rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.

2010-2019 Freightliner Cascadia Detroit DD15 Moderate DIY

SPN 3361 FMI 5 (DEF dosing valve circuit open) on the DD15 is the DEF doser injector. Replace the doser; OEM Detroit part runs $500-$900. Before swapping, always check the connector and pigtail -- rodents love the wiring in this area. Clean the doser mounting surface and use a fresh gasket. If crystallization is visible on the doser tip, soak the old unit in warm distilled water before deciding to replace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does SPN 3361 FMI 5 mean on a Detroit Diesel?

It means Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) System Open Circuit Detected. The aftertreatment control module (ACM) monitors the voltage on the DEF dosing unit circuit after dosing has been enabled and then disabled, and sets SPN 3361 FMI 5 when it sees an open circuit instead of the dosing unit's coil. Detroit's own description is "Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) System Open Circuit Detected" (the 2013 edition says "DEF System Circuit Failed Open"). It runs continuously once the conditions are met, takes at most about 50 seconds to decide, lights the MIL and CEL, and the engine derates 25%.

Where does this description come from?

From Detroit Diesel Corporation's own service bulletin for this SPN and FMI, which Detroit filed with NHTSA. The title, the conditions and the check sequence above are Detroit's, not a generic J1939 reading of the SPN.

Mechanics Guide Step-by-step diagnosis

How Do You Diagnose DD-3361-5?

  1. Ignition off. Disconnect the DEF dosing unit harness connector and inspect both halves for bent, spread, broken, pushed-out or corroded pins and wire damage near the connector.

  2. Disconnect the ACM 120-pin connector and inspect it the same way.

  3. Measure resistance between pin 1 of the dosing unit harness connector and pin 28 of the ACM harness connector: less than 5 ohms is good; otherwise repair the open wire.

  4. Measure resistance across pins 1 and 2 on the dosing unit itself: 4 to 8 ohms means the dosing unit is fine and Detroit directs you to replace the ACM; outside that range, replace the dosing unit.

  5. Verify the repair with the key off for five minutes, then confirm the fault stays inactive.
